| Activities of the Batken Branch of FTI |

The Batken regional office was opened in September 1999, connected with the incursion of Islamic militants in the territory of Kyrgyzstan, known in history as the “Batken Events.” FTI played an enormous role in spreading objective and prompt information about the situation in Batken, as it was only one of the organizations who had the necessary resources to do so. In its first stages, the office conducted monitoring of the situation and distributed the humanitarian help of International Organizations to local communities. In May 2003, the Batken regional office was registered as the Batken Branch of the Fund. This allowed the improvement of communication with sponsoring organizations to democratize the process of decision making within the organization. Activities of the Batken Branch:
Implemented projects: Raising the Potential of Local Governing Body Representatives and the Non-Government Sector in Conflict Management, sponsored by the European Commission. The aim of the project is to lower the impact of conflicts on the vital functions of ten communities, located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, which borders Uzbekistan. Preventing Conflict by a Joint Approach to the Security in Border Communities in the Ferghana Valley, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UK. The aim of the project is to restore confidence and trust in the youth, local governing bodies and security agencies (including police, border guards etc.) in the villages, located along the border, so that together they can solve the problems of security. Advancing Civic Consciousness and Tolerance in the Ferghana Valley,sponsored by Karitas, France. The aim of the project is to advance tolerance and strengthen the role of political parties and non-for-profit organizations in the decision making process, paying attention to the social, economic position of the population in the Batken region. Developing the Potential of Women and the Youth to lower the Impact of Conflicts, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway. The aim of the project is to improve the skills and development ability of the youth, women, local self-governments and citizens in the prevention and alleviation of conflicts in their communities and furthermore, in the ability to react correctly to the basic reasons of conflict. Parnership, sponsored by the Danish Council of refugees through the network NGO “Peace Valley.”The aim of the project is decrease tension arising on the use of pastures in bordering villages of the Batken (Kyrgyzstan) and Isfarin (Tajikistan) regions. Towards Stability through Joint Activities and Dialogue, sponsored by the Democratic Commission. The aim of the project is to invest in stabilising the situation in the Batken region, by restoring trust between different ethnic groups in multiethnic and border communities in the region.
